The story of Lerici is very old: the first settlements seems that date back at Etruscan time. Thanks to its strategic position, close to the sea, the city became an important natural harbor where first settled the Etruscans and used as a stopover port, and for several important families (including Malaspina) subsequently became the property of the Maritime Republic of Genoa in 1152. This liability was important for territorial expansion towards the east of Genoa, for a period of time from 1241 to 1254, became the property of the maritime republic of Pisa.
